Medium Voltage Cables

Clean Manufacturing - the secret behind the quality and longer life of our cables.

1. Fundamental to the development of high quality, trusted medium voltage cable at Draka’s facility in Sweden has been the introduction of R3 technology including clean rooms and closed systems for materials handling – processes usually reserved for high voltage cable manufacture. Here, the crucial areas of the factory are contamination-controlled to eradicate the risk of environmental pollutants such as dust, airborne microbes, aerosol particles and chemical vapours from jeopardising the purity of the cable construction.

2. Not only does the closed system ensure that the materials used are not contaminated, those specified are all of the highest quality. The conductive cores are formed from copper or aluminium in a comprehensive range of cross sections. Another major component is XLPE (cross-linked polyethylene) – a thermosetting material which is able to perform in temperatures of up to 90°C without prematurely degrading. This contributes considerably to the resilience of the product.

3. In 2007, Draka made a €6 million investment to refurbish and extend the Nässjö site. The most significant development was the incorporation of a new peroxide cure CCV-Line for the insulation of our medium voltage cores. The line has doubled the capacity of the factory to meet the growing global demands for 10-36 kV medium voltage cable.

4. Fed from an extruder platform, the CCV-Line is 220m long with a vertical drop of 20m. It features a 200mm diameter tube through which the cable is cross linked at high temperature and high pressure.

5. Quality control extends across all aspects of the manufacturing process and includes stringent testing procedures including X-rays during production to confirm the structural integrity of the cable. In accordance with European and country specific standards, Draka medium voltage cable is continuously put through long-term water immersion tests, followed by high voltage electrical breakdown testing to ensure the cables will be fully reliable throughout their expected operational life-span. All of the above is to ensure that Draka produces the highest quality medium voltage cables.
